Understanding the commercial context for my clients’ needs is central to what I do.

Practice Areas

  • Commercial

I started my career in the commercial litigation section of Freehills (now Herbert Smith Freehills). It was there that I confirmed that I most liked working on a broad range of commercial matters. That is something I have maintained at the bar. There, my practice has ranged over matters concerning superannuation trusts, franchise agreements, commercial supply and purchase agreements and domestic building construction amongst others.

  • Insurance

I have substantial experience advising and appearing in both contentious and uncontentious insurance matters concerning life, first party and third party liability insurance. I have been instructed by both insureds and insurers in disputes concerning cover and indemnity. I am particularly well-placed to assist corporations with their insurance arrangements, whether that is in relation to a claim for indemnity, in determining whether they have appropriate cover or advising on insurance issues in the context of a business merger or acquisition.

I am a member of the Australian Professional Indemnity Group (APIG) and a member of the Victorian Committee of the Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA).

  • Corporate

I have had experience in Corporations Act matters throughout my career, both as a solicitor and at the bar. Those matters have included matters in which there were allegations that directors and officers were in breach of their duties and matters requiring advice as to directors’ potential liability for insolvent trading. Additionally, I have advised clients concerning potential oppression proceedings and others alleged to have contravened the Act.

  • Professional Standards

I have regularly been briefed in matters involving allegations that professional standards have not been upheld. These matters have included disputes alleging professional negligence against solicitors, building professionals and members of other professions. I have also been briefed to advise applicants for admission by the Supreme Court of Victoria and, where appropriate, prepare for an appearance before the Board of Examiners. Additionally, I have been briefed to appear with clients required to attend disciplinary hearings convened by their professional associations.
